BACKGROUND
Under the direction of Imam Muhammad Magid of the ADAMS Center in Northern Virginia, Matrimonial Retreats began in 2002. Initially the retreats were a weekend long event for Muslim Singles who were serious about marriage and wanted an Islamic venue to interact within, to determine marriage compatibility.
The retreats were facilitated by Imam Magid and married Muslim couples chaperoned, answering questions, offering advise based on their own marriages, guiding the younger singles and offering comfort and encouragement in a very nervous situation.
The response to the married chaperones was excellent. The single Muslims realized that they needed support to openly discuss their apprehensions, requirements and seek guidance in a one-to-one discreet way.
From this initial Retreat, Companionships began as a community service organization to serve the singles within Muslim communities, Inshallah.
OUR PHILOSOPHY AND APPROACH
The Companionships philosophy is that continual personal growth and development strengthens character, builds confidence and develops resilience, which help guide actions and reactions. This is the basis on which we challenge individuals to break down some worldly barriers and identify their own true traits and characteristics. We believe that once you know who you are to the best of your knowledge; only then you can move forward to find compatibility for those traits and characteristics. This is the best we can do, and leave the rest to Allah.
We offer a multi-faceted approach with a personal touch, by offering an online database and related services, on-site community events, and ongoing pre-marital counselling. We bring a wide variety of Islamic resources, sound knowledge and understanding of Islamic based processes in acquiring compatible spouses, by establishing a personal support system for each member.
Companionships respects the right of all individuals to have personal preferences, and our staff work closely with parents, relatives and community members to make candidate recommendations and facilitate meetings.
Therefore our success isn’t measured in the number of connections we make but rather in the quality of Islamic life that each individual creates and sustains as a result of knowledge gained via Companionships.
VISION
Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) motivates us to do good works in the community, by providing sadaqha (charity). God willing, we will utilize Islamic knowledge, examples, and practice, along with Islamic tools and techniques to establish and continually strengthen and nurture core family relations.

MATRIMONIAL ADVISORS
Unlike other Muslim Matrimonial services, Companionships has an added aspect of Matrimonial Advisors, who support, advise and guide participants during the event sessions as well as support communication via our website.
All registered singles on our website are assigned a married Matrimonial Advisor of the same gender, to support, guide, answer questions, run things by, give sound advice and motivate the singles, as they email/communicate with potential spousal candidates.
The Companionships, Matrimonial Advisors are married couples that range in age, ethnicity, and the length of time they have been married. Advisors are trained by local imams in core Islamic etiquette when looking for marriage to guide the singles. Their role is to listening, offer options in problem solving, offer a different perspective, recommend candidates based on criteria, and in handle sensitive questions and concerns, with confidentiality and respect.
Matrimonial Advisors are encouraged to share their personal experiences as examples and with ongoing training and field experiences, our Matrimonial Advisors are well equipped to support and counsel others in seeking a spouse.
